Home Warranty of America provides 13-month terms — most other home warranty companies only have 12-month contracts. The higher of its two service call fee options is on the pricier side at $100, but it's not out of the average range for the industry, which is $60 to $125.

Home Warranty of America coverage exclusions

In some instances, there are parts of otherwise covered items that will be excluded from coverage. It’s important to read your contract to fully understand what coverage for each item truly entails.

Home Warranty of America does specify some coverage exclusions, which is typical for all home warranty service plans. Often, parts that are not essential to the item performing its core function may be excluded. For example, dishwashers are covered by both of HWA’s plans, but racks, baskets, rollers and door seals are not covered. Similarly, the electrical system coverage won’t cover items like fixtures.

You can find a full list of exclusions in Home Warranty of America's sample contract.

Home Warranty of America claims and coverage limits

Claims can be submitted online or through the company’s toll-free number 24/7, including holidays. Emergency services can be rushed at HWA’s discretion. Someone over the age of 18 must be present in the home during the repair.

To request service from Home Warranty of America:

    1. Submit a claim online or over the phone as soon as an issue is discovered.
    2. HWA will contact an authorized technician within 48 hours to schedule your requested repair.
    3. Pay the service call fee ($75 or $100, depending on your plan).

Should the repair fail or the same issue reoccur within the service recall period, HWA will send a technician to complete new repairs without charging you a service fee or any additional costs.

    Coverage limits

Home Warranty of America’s coverage limits per term are no more than $5,000 per covered item or $15,000 total per contract term. None of its plans cover preexisting conditions, which is standard in the industry.

Specific coverage limits and maximum payouts depend on the appliance or system in need of repair or replacement — these are outlined in the chart below.

ItemHome Warranty of America’s coverage limit
Electrical or plumbing rust and corrosion $2,000
Heating systems, tankless water heaters, well pumps and saltwater pool equipment $1,500
In-ground pool and spa equipment, water heaters and stand-alone ice makers or freezers $1,000
Ductwork and plumbing systems $1,000 for inaccessible items
    Septic systems and toilets $500
Burglar and fire alarm systems, ceiling and exhaust fans and central vacuums $400

I purchased 2 HWA contracts on homes that I purchased. My recommendation is to closely inspect the appliances carefully when you purchase and get the costs on what you may have to replace. I personally replaced all my appliances, so not more than 2 years old. At $500 per year initially and $700+ renewal, it will be way more efficient to replace one appliance each year. My experience with HWA is that they will only cover a portion of a replacement if they can't repair. Let's do the math, I had an issue with my refrigerator and it took over 4 months before they realized it can't be fixed. $500 for hwa warranty + $700 renewal + $100 service call + (waiting for 4 months) = $1300 + 699 for new refrigerator = $1999 - $494 (money they determined to get a replacement refrigerator). I could have purchased a dishwasher and range.

I made a claim on 11/27/23 that my heat pump was not heating. The 1st tech came out within 4 days and attempted a repair that worked for about 8 hours. After a good deal of hassle, he came back 3 days later and did something else to the unit. This time it worked for 2 hours. The tech refused to come back. I had to call HWA and request my claim be reassigned. I got another tech after almost 2 weeks. He said the unit needed replacing, which HWA refused to do. They insisted the unit be repaired, which the technician said was irresponsible, but also not possible, because my unit was so old he couldn’t get parts. I ultimately called another company and got a replacement unit installed on 1/12/24.

As of 4/11/24, my claim with HWA is still open, and they have not contacted me since December. I’ve called repeatedly to cancel, but there is no way to do so without calling and going through 3-4 phone menu prompts. I finally got someone on the phone today – their entire customer service operation is based in another country – and she informed me I would have to be transferred to another dept to process my cancellation. All I got was a recorded message asking for my phone number to give me a callback because HWA “values my time.” No estimated wait time, no position number, just a promise of a “call back.” I’m not holding my breath. HWA was recently purchased, and the company has been one step below a dumpster fire ever since. Don’t waste your money.

The plastic handle of my 14 year old built-in microwave has started to disintegrate and has snapped at the top. The microwave is the sort that is positioned over a hob with an extractor, I guess one day it was bound to give way. Logged the issue online with Home Warranty of America and was assigned a repairer. The tech came out, suggested replacing the door, then realized it was an out of date model so said the microwave needed replacing. Claim denied! Why?

I asked for a referral to a case manager, "not wear and tear". I asked (a) how do I appeal that given it is a 14 year old microwave which you say you cover? Answer: "you can't". How can I speak with your superior for an explanation? Answer: "you can't, I am the highest ranking person you can speak to"! So think about this when spending your hard earned money, a warranty company that makes their own rules?? Really??? Couldn't they simply say it's not wear and tear and not pay a single claim? I suspect that's exactly what Home Warranty of America (HWA) do. Stay well away if you can.

As others have stated, this used to be a good service. Now they are scam artist. I was let to believe my HVAC system would be covered under warranty. Took over a month to get a final approval of the replacement from the 3rd technician to finally come out and look. After all was said and done apparently the entire unit for a 2600 sq ft home would cost the HWA only $2500 dollars and the rest was up to us to pay $4500. And after complaining and asking for a second opinion the claim was "expired" and apparently was never approved. Scam artist. Stay away seriously.

After almost 5 years with them and not a single prior claim my AC gave out. After making a claim they send 2 "techs". They showed up in personal car dressed as they were going out. "Sir, you going to need a whole new unit". We going to submit a invoice to the HWA. 2 days later I get an email that my claim is approved. Good news!!! Well, not so good. they were going to cover the air handler (inside unit) but wanted me to purchase the condenser (outside unit) for $1,445 (their wholesale price). They also wanted me to pay the "techs" $3,030 for installation, Freon charge etc. They simply don't want to cover anything.

HWA Home Warranty used to be the best home warranty company out there. Their techs were great, their customer service was excellent, and the work they did was outstanding. That's the reason I've been with them for over 10 years. Then, they got bought out by another company and went completely the opposite. They send technicians who are so bad, they actually do damage, then claim "we're not responsible for their mistakes". Their wait times for repairs border on the ridiculous (2 months to repair my microwave). They try to weasel out of everything they possibly can and, when they do, they won't refund the service fee. Sad ending for a once great company. Avoid at all costs!

I put my claim in with Home Warranty of America about stoppages and clogs in my sewer line. A plumber was assigned a week later, did his inspection, and concluded he would need to run a cable into the sewer line to solve the problem. I paid, got a receipt, and he was gone. I called the him that same evening, and again the next morning to see if he got any feedback about my claim, but no answer. So I then called HWA only to learn my claim was denied. I didn’t have a clean-out drain (which I have, but the plumber couldn’t use) and HWA don’t cover claims if the plumbers have to either remove the toilet or get on the roof to do the job. I didn’t agree with their decision, so I appealed it. Only to be told I only get 15 minutes on the phone to state my case.

HWA states…their plans protect you from the high cost of unexpected repair bills. With a plan with HWA you don’t have to face household breakdowns alone (Paraphrasing). Well I was left alone and with a high cost repair bill. I would have felt better if hwa/plumber would have tried using a plunger, some liquid, or gave a suggestion for my money. Also, in July 2023, I put a claim in because my dryer went out. It was in September, a week from making exactly 2 months before my dryer was repaired. Home warranty of america has been a big disappointment, and I will not be renewing my warranty with this company.
